The Williams FW16 competed in the 1994 Formula One season and was raced by British driver Damon Hill to finish runner-up in the 1994 World Drivers Championship. In 1991, Mazda became the first Japanese automaker – and only rotary-engine racer – to win the world’s most demanding endurance race, the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
In the end, it came down to the reliability of the Wankel rotary engine that made up for the lack of speed against the mighty Jaguar and Mercedes competitors. The unique conditions that enabled this surprising victory – along with a crowd pleasing high-revving engine with F1-like noise – immediatelly elevated the 787B to racing legend status.
